Structural Package Designs book by The Pepin Press

From my Tati Ambia blog

---

The Pepin Press books have become an addiction for me.

Their books are amazing... and I mean, super amazing.

I am totally lost for words really. If I had the money, I would buy every single Pepin Press book out there.

The Agile Rabbit editions are among my faves.

My very own copy of Structural Package Designs book...

Gold Palm Sculpture 2006

Made this at CENFAD for 3D class in 2006.

Materials: Plaster, Wood, Paint, Glue, Stones, Glass, Jewelry, Wires etc.
Size: 3 feet

The Prophet Book 2006

I made this A3 size book on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) for our 3D class in 2006 at CENFAD KL. All of the pages are made using A3 paper, painted carefully one by one. Unfortunately, I have yet taken pictures of the papers and they are currently not with me in KL.

The covers are made of plaster and wood covered with mosaic tiles (glass, mirror etc). The other side of the cover has a painted picture of an elephant (the year Prophet Muhammad pbuh was born) with some calligraphy on it.

I have only 3 pictures of the book and when I do get the rest, I will upload them here.

Watercolor Paintings 2006

Some watercolor paintings I made in 2006. I have more and some are still in Europe. I have to get them back.

Peace is all we are asking for...

During Prophet Muhammad's time (peace be upon him), the Jews, Christians, Muslims and other people of different creed lived in peaceful coexistence. Why should it be any different today?

Hate not the Jewish community for many are not Zionists. It is the Zionists who are committing crimes. There are good loving Jewish people out there who are promoting peace like these people here.

World Industrial Design Day 2009

http://tatiambia.blogspot.com

Happy Industrial Design Day everyone!

My class mates from SEGi College University and I will be heading to UiTM today to celebrate this special day together with fellow designers, engineers, students and design lecturers.

There will be some design/construction competitions at the event for students. I believe this is the first time that all my mates and I are celebrating WIDD (World Industrial Design Day).

The event will commence at 830am and ends at 5pm. After that I will have to rush to KLPAC for Kaki Blue The Musical rehearsals.

Going off to bed now! I bet you that my mates and I will look like Zombies with muka basi and air liur meleleh later at UiTM.

Excellent.

Malaysia Design Competition 2008 Prize Giving Ceremony

A prize giving ceremony was held last Thursday, April 2nd 2009 for Malaysia Design Competition 2008 at Universiti Kuala Lumpur, KL, Malaysia.

Organized by Malaysia Design Council aka Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM), Malaysia Design Competition (MDC) is held annually and is supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation of Malaysia (MOSTI).

The only sponsor for MDC 2008 was Shell Malaysia and it has been 3 years ever since they first collaborated with MRM. The event also saw the launch of Malaysia Design Competition 2009 with Green Design as the theme.

As some of you might already know, I was one of the contestants for MDC 2008 and was qualified as one of the top 6 finalists. Unfortunately for me, I did not win any of the top 3 prizes for the University Student category but ended up with a consolation prize of a pewter-glass award, a cheque of RM2,000.00 and a certificate from Malaysia Design Council.

Nevertheless, I am still happy as this is my first participation in a design competition and never did I expect to even be shortlisted as one of the 6 finalists. Many thanks to God the Almighty, my family, lecturers, class mates and friends who supported me all the way.

Here are some scanned pictures of the booklet distributed after the announcement of winners

The winner of the Professional category got his product featured on the front cover of the booklet

The theme of last year's Malaysia Design Competition was Safety/ Keselamatan

List of prizes and details on judges

The top 6 finalists of the School Student category

Out of hundreds (or perhaps thousands) of participants each year, only the top 6 are chosen for each category. None of the 6 finalists in the School Student category were from Kuala Lumpur. Amazing.

University Student category

No one won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize for our category. Apparently, there were 6 finalists for the University Student category, but I have no idea what had happened to the other two.

Nur Hayati who?

For many years, school teachers, college/university lecturers and employers have always spelled and pronounced my name wrongly. My full name is Nur Hartati Yacob, not Nur Hayati Yacob.

Is this even valid?

They even printed my name wrongly on the certificate. Excellent...

One of the gifts included in the gift packs that were given out to guests. I love it!

Prize money

I guess getting RM2 000.00 as a consolation prize is not bad after all. They got my name right here! =)

And here are some of the pictures that were taken at the event

My mom and brother, Johan came to support me

It was a small and private event

L-R: Head of MRM, Tati, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation & a representative of Shell Malaysia

As I was walking towards them, I could hear them whispering to each other while staring at me. I am pretty sure they were talking about my gigantic height... Fee Fi Fo Fum...! =)

Later that night I saw myself on TV3 News!

The Deputy Minister told me "Oh wow! You created something for the blind? Why don't you come to my ministry one of these days so you can work on your inventions with us?". I swear to God I thought I was dreaming until he told me to smile at the cameras. =)

No appetite

I have been having sharp pains on the middle of my chest which spreads all the way to the back (I was involved in a road accident in February) and can no longer eat normally without feeling pain every time I swallow food or consume liquid. I need to see the specialist soon.

I
The award

The top part is made of pewter stuck on a block of glass. Very heavy yet very nice!

Ain't that sweet

How cool is that? You would still get a trophy even if you do not win the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.

Side profile

One of the winners of the Student Category accidentally poked my back with his trophy...

Hmm... What shall I create for this year's competition?

Acting Blind

Here are some photos of me that were taken by my friend, Rastam Toh.
In these photos you will notice that I am either wearing a pair of sunnies or just with my eyes closed. I specifically asked Rastam to have the photos done in a way that would make me look like a virtually impaired person as I needed to send them to MRM for a booklet they are printing on the Malaysia Young Designer Award competition.

With Azrein =)

Rastam & Azrein

Together with his lovely wife, Azrein, the two came up with brilliant and crazy ideas for the shoot which led to more than a hundred wonderful frames that day. It was all done at his studio in Taman Ampang Hilir where you will find many Koreans living and working there. I serious felt like I was in Seoul!

Do check out his work at his website http://rastamphotography.com

Thank you Rastam & Azrein! xxx =)

I bought the cane just for this shoot and will donate it later to a blind person who cannot afford one.

One of my favourites!

Looking for my shoes...

Putting on the shoe...

What do I feel like wearing today?

Since the theme of the design competition is SAFETY, we decided to have pics taken with the fire extinguisher...

The fire extinguisher was a litte heavy. I had to put it down every few minutes for a while and lift it back up for the next few shots...

All of us were sweating like mad doing this scene. Azrein had to carry the diffuser here and there and Rastam had to fix the lighting and take pictures at the same time.

Polymath Eyewear Prototypes

Here are the prototypes I made for my final presentation for Malaysia Young Designer Award 2008. I was to submit the model a few weeks before presentation. Judging/presentation day has been postponed to another date.

Prototype 1: Lense & two handles

Some slight modifications were made so that I could easily assemble the eyewear in front of judges

Like this

Prototype 2: Similar like Prototype 1, only this time the rapid prototyping machine printed the colors right. Prototype 1 colors were errr....

Prototype 3: A one piece model

With this model, I will not be able to remove the parts during presentation. However, I still find this one to be the best.

Trying out Prototype 2 lense. I know... Who on earth would even wear these ehh?

Yeah I changed the sensors part. Instead of having too many small red sensors, I thought by placing two sensors would be sufficient.

Lets see if I can place this one here...

Alamak, salah letak...

The engineer told me that I could only choose one prototype or else I would have to pay extra. Since I was broke and cannot take all three home, I chose Prototype 3.

It came with a very nice box and I handed it straight to Malaysia Deisgn Council later that day. I wonder if I could keep it once the competition is all over...

Do wish me luck! I am quite nervous now actually...

I would also like to thank everyone who helped me out with my project. This would have not been possible if it were not for your help and encouragement. Thank you very much and may God bless you always!

Happy Chinese Year everyone! xxx =)
